Piano Practice Hacks

  1. Maintain finger curvature, especially for beginner or intermediate players.
  2. Emphasize sight reading over memorization, particularly for beginners and intermediates.
  3. Commence practice at a slow tempo with a metronome.
  4. Develop proficiency with metronome use and rhythmic counting.
  5. Perfect short sections (1 or 2 measures) before progression.
  6. Reduce speed by half if errors persist; aim for five mistake-free repetitions.
  7. Post-practice, engage with recordings of renowned pianists: listen, play along, and use headphones for focus.
  8. To enhance speed, practice each hand separately before gradual integration with a metronome, starting at 50-60 bpm and increasing by 5 or 10 bpm.
  9. Feel free to deviate from these guidelines for relaxation and enjoyment when fatigued.
  10. Mastery of the preceding rules permits flexibility in practice methods.
